Skjern River

Twisting river, straight and now twisting again…

Through the last century large interferences have been made in the nature around Skjern River. After attempts of embanking and regulating through the last 100 years, a large draining project was carried out in the 1960’s. The twisted streams were led into embanked canals and pump units were built.

The water had to go away from the area, and 4,000 hectares of meadow and marsh were changed into arable land. Moist meadows, haystacks and cattle were replaced by productive cornfields and agricultural machinery. Today – 30 years later – meadows and wetlands are back.

The Skjern River Project comprises app. 2,200 ha – or app. half of the area, which were drained in the 1960’s. It is the largest nature restoration project in Northern Europe. The exhibition ”Alle Tiders Å” tells the story of the restoration project and the river. The exhibition is used as basis knowledge of the project and is visited by both schools, local inhabitants and guests. At Lønborg Kirke (church) is a wonderful view of the valley, and tables and benches makes it a suitable site for picnics. www.skjernaa.info.
